We invite you to participate in a research project.

Before agreeing to participate in this project, it is important to take the time to read and understand the information below. If there are words or sections that you do not understand or do not seem clear, do not hesitate to contact the project manager.

Project's objectives

This research aims to experiment with an online science learning model. It uses for this series of scientific questions proposed in an online application for which users remain anonymous.

Nature of participation

Your participation consists of answering questions related to science that will be asked online at www.riopel.uqam.ca/birds. You will have a few seconds to answer each question and then a few more seconds to review or learn the correct answer. The same questions will be asked several times to reinforce and follow your learning. A pause screen will appear automatically after about 15 minutes. This break can be as long as you like. It is important for the research project to continue until the third break, for a total participation of about 50 minutes. You will then receive your results.

In addition to contributing to the advancement of knowledge about learning curves, your participation will allow you to learn, for example, constellations of the starry sky.

Risks and disadvantages

By participating in this research, you do not expose yourself to any particular risks.

In order to protect your identity, you will use a username of your choice. No publication or communication about research will contain information that identifies you. Your anonymous research data will be kept indefinitely on a secure institutional server because they are important and we want to be able to use them in other similar research projects.

Voluntary participation and right of withdrawal

Your participation in this project is voluntary. This means that you agree to participate in the project without any constraint or external pressure. It also means that you are free to terminate your participation at any time during this research, without prejudice of any nature whatsoever, and without having to justify yourself. In this case, if you request it, we will destroy all the data associated with your username during the period concerned.

By agreeing to participate in this project, you do not waive any of your rights or release the researchers, the sponsor (s) or the institution involved (or the institutions involved) from their civil and professional obligations.

You can contact the project manager at (514) 987-3000 ext. 8982 for additional questions about the project. You can discuss with him the conditions under which your participation takes place.

The Institutional Committee on Ethics for Research Involving Humans (CIEREH) has approved this project (2016_e_1457) and is monitoring it. For more information, please contact the Committee Coordinator at 987-3000 ext. 7753 or by email at ciereh@uqam.ca.

If you have any questions about your rights as a participant in this research project or if you have any complaints, you can contact the Office of the Ombudsman at UQAM (E-mail: ombudsman@uqam.ca; 514) 987-3151.

Your collaboration is important to the realization of this project and the research team wishes to thank you warmly. If you wish to obtain a written summary of the main results of this research, it will be available at the bottom of the page by consulting the following link: http://www.riopel.uqam.ca/birds.

Participant's consent

By checking the "Yes" box and clicking on the "Start" button, I acknowledge having read this information and consent form. I understand the objectives of the project and what my involvement entails. I confirm that I have had the time to reflect on my decision to participate. I acknowledge having had the opportunity to contact the project manager (or his / her delegate) to ask any questions regarding my participation and that I have been satisfactorily answered. I understand that I can withdraw from the project at any time without penalty of any form or justification. I voluntarily consent to participate in this research project.

Statement by the Principal Investigator
